Meet Our Administrators

  • Craig Kotsmith has been an Assistant Principal at Brainerd High School since 2018. He began his career as a high school business and technology teacher before serving four years as the principal of Carlton High School.


    When asked about Brainerd Schools, Mr. Kotsmith said, "There is no other place I would choose for my kids. This community is top-notch and provides excellent opportunities for all students." He feels fortunate to live in a place that boasts a great school system, as well as numerous outdoor recreation opportunities.

    With degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Saint Mary’s University, and UMD, Mr. Kotsmith has a love for learning and building relationships. He understands the scope of his role and is committed to supporting the growth and success of Brainerd students.

  • Nate Merseth joined the Brainerd team in 2008 as assistant principal. He began his career in education as a teacher in the Pine River-Backus School District, where he taught for seven years. Following that, he served as the dean of students at Pillager School District.

    Nate is proud to be part of the Brainerd High School community and values the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated and compassionate staff. He believes the school’s greatest strength lies in its commitment to meeting the individual needs of every student and fostering a positive, inclusive culture that supports success for all.

    He holds a bachelor's degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, as well as advanced degrees from Southwest State University and St. Cloud State University.

    Outside of school, Nate enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. His family shares a love for the outdoors and often spends their free time on the water.
